There are two men by the name of Alexander Smith who saw service as a Private with the 79th Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders out in India during the Indian Mutiny. One a Private (No.3182) the other a Private (No.4605), both being present during the operations at Lucknow from November 1857 to March 1858.
